A Step Back in Time – Club Memorabilia from 25 Years Ago

November 18, 2008

PP Chandran NairPast President Chandran Nair recently went into his storage archives and discovered, to his amazement, a box containing items from the Rotary Club of Gombak. When he opened the boxed, he was surprised to find items that have been long forgotten – to be precise – items that have been left for over 25 years. Read more

A time for reflection, patience, sacrifice and humility

September 4, 2008

DatesIt is that time of year when our Muslim friends fast for a month. Fasting is meant to teach a person patience, sacrifice and humility. For the last two years, the Rotary Club of Gombak has had a project to cheer up children cancer patients at Universiti Hospital, as we join them for a buka puasa, or the breaking of fast. This year, we will do doing the same. Read more

Working to Make Dreams Real

August 28, 2008

Jen SiowWe are close to the end of “Membership and Extensions Month”, and I am happy to report that our Membership Chair Aimee Liew has been doing a fine job. A Club is only as strong as its members, and I am keen to ensure that we have strong and solid growth this year. We will be having a speaker from the District soon to speak on this topic. In the meantime, I encourage members to look at potential members that they would like to invite to the Club. Read more

Extending friendships in Rotary

August 21, 2008

It has been another fruitful week for the Rotary Club of Gombak. Last week, we had a successful Joint Meeting with the Rotary Club of Damansara at the Royal Selangor Club. It was a nice change from the usual, and I would like to thank President Usha Rajasingam for initiating the meeting and also for all her assistance in helping to “Make Dreams Real”. Members who attended the meeting appeared to enjoy the change of scene. We also learnt how other Clubs run their meetings, and it was a good experience for everyone concerned.

On Saturday 16 August 2008, I was the Guest of Honour for the Installation of the Rotaract Club of Gombak. [Full report soon]. Congratulations to President William Kim and his new Board for a nice event, which was well attended by the Rotaractors. Congratulations also to Immediate Past President Amanda Lum and her Board for their work in the past year. Organising Chair Jacqueline Mak also did a great job. Rotarians who joined me that evening were Treasurer Douglas Brown, New Generations Chair PP Veiven Goon, Rotaract Advisor PE Jeff Ho, IPP Ridzuan Yang, Interact Advisor PP Chandran Nair, and PP Yeo Soon Teck. Everyone had plenty of food and the casual theme suited the event very well.

August is still Membership and Extension Month. Membership Chair Aimee Liew has proposed a few things which we will soon be implementing to support our membership programme, so stay tuned for more of this in the near future. In the meantime, do think about bringing a friend to our meetings. There is much to be gained in sharing Rotary.

The Installation of the Rotary Club of Makati South is fast approaching. As you are all well aware, RCMS sent a large delegation to our recent Installation. It would be great to return the visit. I am pleased to confirm that I will be attending the function in Manila, and I hope as many Gombakians can come and join us for what should be a very enjoyable trip.

Ramandan is also fast approaching and a very meaningful service project for our Club the last few years, has been the visit to the children’s cancer ward of Universiti Hospital, where we try to bring some joy and cheer to the children. We will be doing the same again this year. Dates and details will be announced soon, so stay tuned for this touching and meaningful event.

Jan Hesseling with Peter PekAnother week has flown past. Compared to the previous few week pre-Installation, I guess this has been a relatively quiet week for the Club. Nevertheless, we have been busy with other things. Read more

Rotary Fellowship at its very best

August 8, 2008

Three PresidentsOne of the cornerstones of Rotary, and a key benefit of being a Rotarian, is the friendship and fellowship that develops between Rotarians all over the world. The recent visit of around 30 Rotarians from our Sister Clubs of Tanglin, Singapore; Makati South, the Philippines; and Taipei Southwest, Taiwan; demonstrated just how special this fellowship bond can be. July 30, 2008

Interact Seri Ampang's IU DayAs we get closer to our 39th Installation Dinner, things are getting very hectic indeed, and there is a lot going on behind the scenes. Many of our members are involved in one way or another, not just working on the event, but also making arrangements for the large visiting contingent expected from our Sister Clubs from overseas. Opportunity to Travel, Semi-Annual Return, IU Day and Rotary on Radio

July 23, 2008

It has been another busy week for many of us in the Club, with our 39th Installation just round the corner. With close to 30 visiting Rotarians and their spouses from four countries now confirmed to attend, we have much more to do and organise, and I am confident that Gombakians will help out and take active part in our programme for our visitors. Installations galore

July 15, 2008

RSG Installation Invite 08-09July is well-known in Rotary circles as the month for Installations. There is much debate about how Clubs should conduct their Installations. Some say that Clubs should just have a simple straightforward affair, and some Clubs do just this. Others argue that a more formal affair with lots of invited guests is appropriate to mark what is an important milestone for a Rotary Club - the passing of the baton and the changing of a new leadership team for the Club.
